The Zurich Center for Military Medical Ethics (CMME) is a joint project ("Fachzentrum") of the federal Centre of Competence for Military and Disaster Medicine (CC MDM)and the University of Zurich. It renders services in teaching and research to the CC MKM in the domain of military medical ethics in accordance with the tasks of the CC MKM (MG, Art. 48b, 1-3 and VKSD Art. 12&13). The CMME is financed by the Swiss Confederation.
The CMME is an academic institution situated at the Center for Ethics of the University of Zürich. The center as a "Fachzentrum" was established on 1.01.2014. The cooperation of the Center for Ethics with the Swiss Armed Forces Medical Services Directorate already started in 2009.
The CMME provides competences in applied ethics for the Swiss Armed Forces Medical Services Directorate, and the ICMM Centre of Reference for Education of IHL and Ethics (ICMM RefC).
The CMME closely cooperates with the ICMM RefC to realize the ICMM Courses on Military Medical Ethics in Times of Armed Conflict and the ICMM Workshop Series on Military Medical Ethics.
As an academic project, research in military medical ethics and academic publications are a core activity of the CMME. In relation to the Workshop Series on Military Medical Ethics, we publish an annual proceedings volume. The daily business of the CMME is led by Dr.phil. Daniel Messelken. The center is supervised by Prof. Francis Cheneval (project partner of the Centre of Competence for Military and Disaster Medicine (CC MDM)).
